Coalition Highlights Charters’ Academic Growth

By News

The Coalition last week distributed a press release highlighting the top-10 charter schools for academic growth in 2024-25. The list was featured in a presentation to the Charter Schools Review Board (CSRB) by the Office of Charter Schools (OCS) earlier this month.

Notably, as the release emphasized, nearly all of the top-10 charter schools for student growth also serve high proportions of economically disadvantaged, non-white students, and they’re doing an amazing job.

As a case in point, the release included information about Reaching All Minds Academy–the No. 3 ranked charter school for academic growth–and that school’s exemplary work with its students.

The release included quotes from CSRB Chair Bruce Friend as well as Coalition Executive Director Dave Machado.

“If you’re a parent or a politician or a taxpayer, this is a big reason you back public charter schools,” said Friend.

“Of course there’s no guarantee students will grow – it’s a challenge for any school,” said Machado. “The charter schools that do record high student growth are clearly doing something right, and they’re often doing it under challenging circumstances. We should look to their example.”

Finally, the release cited two schools, Triangle Math and Science Academy and The Math and Science Academy of Apex, that ranked in the top-10 charter schools for growth and performance – “a remarkable achievement.”

Sallie B. Howard School earns top honors as an ESEA Distinguished School!

By News

Congratulations to Sallie B. Howard School (SBHS) in Wilson! SBHS was recognized at the State Board of Education’s meeting this month for excellence as a National ESEA Distinguished School. Specifically, SBHS is the top school in the state–from an analysis based entirely on data–in making gains with students with disabilities. As you may know, the ESEA Distinguished Schools Program spotlights exemplary schools in three categories: Category 1 (exceptional student performance and growth); Category 2 (success in closing achievement gaps); and Category 3 (excellence in working with special student populations).

Here’s a screenshot from the Dept. of Public Instruction’s (DPI) presentation explaining the categories:

Congratulations also are in order for Triangle Math and Science Academy, which was a top-10 finalist in Category 2! In addition, we congratulate Summerfield Charter Academy, a top-10 finalist in Category 3! Along with SBHS, these schools are all Coalition member schools.

Also notable: Five of the 10 finalists in Category 3 were charter schools. Here’s another screenshot from DPI’s presentation:
