The Charter Schools Review Board (CSRB) met last week, closing a new school due to under-enrollment, approving an accelerated applicant, and denying two others. We have the details for you below.
School closure
The CSRB revoked the charter for Triad International Studies Academy (TISA), a new High Point charter school that opened in August, ordering it to close by the end of December. The reason for the closure is that the school currently has just 42 students enrolled, well below the 80 students required by state statute. TISA has the right to appeal the CSRB’s decision to the State Board of Education.
Applicant decisions
In addition, the CSRB approved the application for Focus Charter Academy, which appeared this month for its second interview. Focus plans to open in Wake County. The CSRB denied applications for Preparatory Leadership Academy (Gaston County) and Encompass Montessori (Wake County).
New charter application, renewal preview, and more
The CSRB also approved revisions to the state’s charter application that will roll out in January 2026. See a summary from the Office of Charter Schools (OCS) of actions and revisions regarding the application. The application reflects months of revision and discussion as well as public comment.
In addition, the CSRB heard a 2026 renewal preview from OCS and discussed the outcome of a September 26 convening of a new CSRB sub-committee to develop guidelines around future sub-campus requests. Draft guidelines will undergo some revisions and come before the CSRB for a vote next month.
Here are two screenshots with information on renewals, showing the 40 schools up for renewal in 2026 and their location in the state.

Finally, the CSRB approved two amendments: a mission statement change request from Pine Lake Preparatory and a request to join the National School Lunch Program from Wayne Preparatory Academy.
The CSRB will hold its next meeting on November 11-2.
