Congratulations to Northeast Academy for Aerospace & Advanced Technologies (NEAAAT)! The Elizabeth City charter school was recently named a participant in the Future of High School (FHS) Network. The network launched in June 2025 with 24 schools or school systems nationwide. (Read the press release announcing the FHS Network.) NEAAAT is just one of two public school units–along with Mooresville Graded School District–in North Carolina to be a part of this network.

Here’s a description from the FHS Network about its goals:

The Future of High School (FHS) Network, launched in partnership with XQ Institute, is driven by a vision for education that goes beyond the constraints of the traditional Carnegie Unit. For over a century, the Carnegie Unit served as the foundation of our educational system, standardizing learning structures but often equating time spent in seat with mastery achieved. The FHS Network embraces a new education architecture built on a competency-based model that prioritizes meaningful learning over seat time. The network will catalyze learning, innovation, and progress to drive evidence and implementation towards a new architecture for high school nationwide.
