John Locke Foundation’s student essay contest

By April 29, 2025 News

Calling all student writers! The John Locke Foundation (JLF) has launched a new essay contest for middle and high school students that focuses on the state’s role in the American Revolution and the country’s founding. The top middle or high school essay writer wins a prize of $2,000.

School leaders, please share the information from JLF’s Kaitlynn Shepherd below with your students and help us spread the word:

We are running an essay contest for middle and high school students with a $2,000 prize. We are also accepting papers from scholars (e.g., professors, graduate students, historians) and undergraduate students ($5,000 and $3,000 prize, respectively).

In honor of the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary, we are asking students and other writers to submit papers exploring North Carolina’s role in the American Revolution and the founding of the United States.

The deadline for final paper submissions is June 15, 2025.

JLF is running the essay contest as part of its NC250: Freedom’s Vanguard Initiative, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
